5 Places to Find Sea Turtles in Maui

5 Places to Find Sea Turtles in Maui

Hawaii is famous for its sea turtles (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles to be exact) and swimming with them (or at least spotting one) tops many people’s bucket lists. Here are five spots where you’re almost guaranteed to see a “honu” on Maui. 1. Turtle Town. Turtle Town is THE best place to find honu on Maui. Located just off shore in South Maui, Turtle Town is named such because of an underwater sea cave that many of these little beauties call home. Most snorkel boat trips will take you to Turtle Town, but if you’re trying to find it on your own it can be a bit trickier. The best place to access the Turtle Town area from the shore is from Maluaka Beach. This is the beach that the Makena Beach Resort sits on and it’s often overlooked because it’s not accessed from the main road through Wailea and Makena. If you’re driving south, turn right onto Makena road (you’ll see signs for the landing) and continue on until you see a parking lot. The beach access is actually a few hundred feet past the parking lot. Once on the beach, enter the water and snorkel south (you’ll be following the golf course). If you’re not comfortable snorkeling that far from the beach, consider renting a paddle board at the Makena Beach Resort and paddling over. 2. Napili Bay. Napili Bay in West Maui is a great place to see turtles from the shore. The south side of the bay has a reef that turtles frequent. This is a great place to spot turtles without actually even getting...
The Ultimate Maui Destination Guide

The Ultimate Maui Destination Guide

Often called the “Honeymooner’s Isle,” Maui is an island in the Hawaiian island chain that consistently receives awards and accolades from the travel industry’s top jetsetters year after year. And it’s no wonder. Maui’s magic lies in its diversity…from golden beaches to lush jungles, fine dining to local dives, five star resorts to hippy towns, Maui truly has it all. While it’s scenery and amenities make it a popular honeymoon destination, its vast variety of activities makes it an appealing vacation for all types. From families looking for fun in the sun to adventure seekers keen on conquering intensive hikes, Maui has something for everyone. Come see for yourself why Maui tops most people’s list for favorite Hawaiian island. Getting There: The Hawaiian Islands are some of the most remote islands in the world, but being the US’s 50th state comes with its perks. Flights from the mainland US (most route through Los Angeles) to Honolulu are plentiful and there are increasingly more options for direct flights to Maui that let you bypass Honolulu altogether. If you’re traveling from the Midwest, American Airlines runs a direct flight to Maui (OGG) from Dallas (DFW). Getting to Maui from anywhere in the US won’t be a challenge as there are plenty of options. When to Go: The weather is temperate in Hawaii year round making it a popular destination during the winter months (Hawaiian seasons follow the seasons of the US Mainland—winter is Nov-Feb). Winter does bring more rain but the beach resort areas of Maui (South and West side) get sunshine most days. A big factor in determining when to...
